Gaia : the goddess of Earth
Gaia : the goddess of Earth

The name Buddha Gaia represents two cosmic and religious images and qualities. It unites the reality of Buddha, symbolic of the religion of awareness, compassion and love, with the ancient western mythological image of Gaia, the goddess of the Earth. Furthermore, it may be seen as the unity of two basic universal forces: the Buddha may be seen to represent the proactive masculine power of universe while Gaia is the metaphor of the nurturing feminine force of nature. Therefore, the Buddha and Gaia are in oneness as a living entity within us, working as a creative force for the general welfare and harmony.

Buddha Gaia is green Buddhist community whose practice is centered on the Noble Eightfold Path for Sustainable Living. We are not involved in politics or aggressive actions to promote our environmental agenda. Instead, we offer practical and achievable ecological proposals based on fundamental Buddhist principles and common sense, which Buddhists and other spiritually-minded people can perform to transform our suffering world into a better place for ourselves and all sentient and non-sentient beings.

Our objective is not just to offer suggestions to the American public but to embody our Buddhist environmentalism as a centerpiece of our daily religious practice, that is, for us, Buddha Gaia is our way of life. Essentially, we look to be living examples of the dharma, spiritual environmentalism and peace within our suffering world.

Please come and join us. Let’s transform our world of confusion, injustice and suffering into its true potential of harmony, love and compassion, that is a Pure Land. Namu-Amida-Butsu!
